Freedom of Information or not?

Folks have been reporting mixed success when requesting the list of licensed dog owners from their city/town. It seems to be a growing problem. I found this story recently regarding a dog walker who is requesting this list and encountering resistance. Check it out.

It’s funny. I ran into this problem not long before first reading this entrie. I went to my town hall and mentioned the “Freedom of Information Act” and the clerk lady said: “I am fully aware of that [the Act]. But I don’t think you can solicit business with a dog license owner list.” I felt a little awkward to be honest, as if I was the bad guy. She told me to write down my info and she’d get back to me in a few days. Well, it’s now been close to a month. I don’t think I’m going to fight this right now. It appears this is a widespread problem after reading your post, J.D. You know, did you ever try the mailers that the Yellow Pages offers? It cost nearly $500 for 1,000 mailers. I’m pretty sure she said they can target dog owners.
I haven’t tried that, but it could be promising. I’d want to know a bit more about their dog owner lists and how accurate and up to date they are. I’d want to know that it’s a quality list of dog owners likely to buy services such as dog walking. In any case, I’d love to here how it works if you do use it. Let me know! Also .50 per mailer seems a little high…
