Hi Pam,

I'm with you on the layering. Often I am ready to start stripping off some layers by the afternoon, or at the very least while snow-shoeing and working up a sweat (we have 3.5 feet of snow on the ground here right now).

Also, the beauty of the outdoors has got to be one of the most enjoyable parts of this job. Every day I was out there I thanked God that I wasn't trapped indoors at a go-nowhere job.

I can tell you that I did cancel walks but it was extremely rare. Usually involving a "snow emergency" or temperatures that posed a health risk to certain breeds. Most of the time I braved the bitter cold and snow (sick or not).

Make sure you have a solid and stated foul weather plan that your clients are aware of and have agreed to. If you don't have one, then it's time to draw one up! Simply state what you will do (or won't do) depending on certain weather conditions and/or forecasts and why.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting, and don't be a stranger!

Hi,

Actually, I really wish that there was a place to go online to talk about what to do in this kind of weather. As far as staying warm, I wear a lot of light weight fleece with a parka over that. I bought a hooded pull over with the face protector at REI and along with a warm hat that keeps me very cozy. I wear warm gloves with fleece lining. My boots are LLBean snow shoeing boots.I definitely recommend Yak Tracks for traction they are great!
I have to get out every day, it helps me keep balanced being with the dogs in the fresh air and often times beautiful trails in the woods.
I would love to know if anyone else has cancelled or changed walk days and times.
Thanks.

I thought the article was great. I totally agree with the article in the sense that it takes a lot of time and effort getting involved in a dog walking business. I had no idea what I was getting involved in when I started walking dogs but I think if you have a genuine passion for animals, the clients can pick up on this and the relationship blossoms and you it can be a thoroughly rewarding profession.

Aw, this was a really quality post. In theory I’d like to write like this too – taking time and real effort to make a good article… but what can I say… I procrastinate alot and never seem to get something done.
